Stainless Structural Steel Overview
Why Stainless Design Differs
No defined yield point. Carbon steel shows a clear yield plateau. Austenitic stainless does not. Design uses 0.2 percent proof stress, the stress at which 0.2 percent permanent strain remains, and because the curve is rounded, the material begins deviating from linear behaviour well below that figure. Deflection under service load is therefore greater than a simple elastic calculation would predict.
Substantial strain hardening. The flip side is that stainless continues gaining strength well past proof stress. Ultimate tensile strength is typically twice the proof stress, against a much narrower gap in carbon steel, which gives considerable reserve beyond first yield.
Lower elastic modulus. With a modulus of elasticity that ranges between 193-200 GPa compared to 200-210 for carbon steel, stainless steel is slightly less rigid.

The practical consequence: serviceability and deflection frequently govern a stainless structural design where strength would have governed the carbon steel equivalent. Designs should follow a stainless-specific code rather than substituting a proof stress figure into carbon steel calculations.
Thermal Movement in Structures
Thermal expansion around fifty percent higher than carbon steel is a genuine design consideration on anything of length.
A 20 metre austenitic member experiencing a 40 degree temperature swing moves roughly 13 mm, against about 9 mm for the carbon steel equivalent. On a fixed-end member that movement generates substantial force, and expansion provision that was adequate for carbon steel will not be adequate here.
Where it matters:
- Long runs of pipe support or walkway framing exposed to solar gain
- Fixings between stainless and carbon steel or concrete, where differential movement loads the connection
- Cladding support systems, where accumulated movement shows as distortion or fastener failure
- Fire performance, since stainless retains a greater proportion of its strength at elevated temperature than carbon steel, though it expands more while doing so
Galvanic Corrosion at Connections
This is where stainless structural work most often goes wrong, and it is a detailing failure rather than a material one.
When two dissimilar metals are in electrical contact in the presence of an electrolyte, the less noble metal corrodes preferentially. Stainless is relatively noble. Carbon steel, galvanised steel, and aluminium are not.
The result is that a stainless bolt through a galvanized member does not corrode. The galvanized member corrodes around it, sometimes quite rapidly, and the failure appears at the connection while both materials individually perform as specified.
Area ratio drives severity. A small stainless fastener in a large carbon steel member is comparatively benign, because the corrosion is spread over a large area. A small carbon steel fastener holding large stainless members is the dangerous case, since the entire galvanic current concentrates on a small anode.
Mitigation:
- Isolate with non-conductive washers, sleeves and gaskets at mixed-metal connections
- Keep the electrolyte away. No electrolyte, no galvanic cell. Sealed and drained details do most of the work
- Match fastener material to the members where practical
- Avoid small anodes. Never use carbon steel fasteners in stainless assemblies exposed to moisture
- Consider coating the more noble metal at the interface, which is counterintuitive but reduces the effective cathode area

Sections are supplied hot rolled, solution annealed and pickled. Laser fused and fabricated sections are available where a rolled section in the required dimension does not exist, which is common, since the stainless section range is far narrower than the carbon steel range.
Applications
- Water and effluent treatment. Screen frames, launder supports, walkway framing, submerged structures
- Food and pharmaceutical plant. Equipment frames, platform structures, support steelwork in washdown areas
- Marine and coastal infrastructure. Jetty fittings, handrails, splash zone structural members
- Chemical process plant. Pipe racks, equipment supports, structures in corrosive atmospheres
- Architecture. Exposed structural members, canopy framing, feature steelwork
- Swimming pool and leisure. Structural components in chlorinated atmospheres, where grade selection is critical
Stainless Structural Steel Stockists in India
Contractors rely on capable stainless structural steel stockists in India because the availability problem here is more acute than in any other stainless product. The section range is narrow, volumes are small, and mills roll infrequently, so a project needing a specific channel or beam size can face a long wait.
Our holding covers the commonly specified angle, channel and flat sizes in austenitic grades, stored segregated from carbon steel with grade identity maintained.
TSB Global LLP is a stockist and supplier rather than a rolling mill, and we would rather set that out plainly than let a project specification assume a mill relationship.
- Commonly specified sections held against project schedules
- Supply from single lengths to project tonnage
- Cutting with dedicated stainless equipment, avoiding iron pickup at cut faces
- Grade identity retained through cutting, supporting site inspection
- Storage isolated from carbon steel, preventing contamination
- Positive material identification available on release
Fabrication and Site Practice
Stainless structural work fails more often through fabrication practice than through material selection.
- Dedicated tools throughout. Carbon steel grinding wheels, wire brushes, clamps, and lifting tools deposit iron which will rust weeks afterwards
- Heat tint must be eliminated from welds through pickling because the colored oxide signifies chromium loss and acts as a corrosion point
- Passivation after fabrication removes embedded iron and restores the passive film uniformly
- Welding distortion is worse than carbon steel. Lower conductivity and higher expansion mean more heat concentration and more movement
- Cut edges need dressing where the structure enters corrosive service
- Protect during construction. Stainless erected early on a site and left among carbon steel work picks up contamination that is far harder to remove later
Testing and Certification
Standard release covers chemical analysis, tensile and 0.2 percent proof stress, elongation, hardness and intergranular corrosion testing where specified.
- Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262
- Positive material identification by portable analyzer
- Dimensional verification against the applicable section standard
- Grain size to ASTM E112
- Third-party verification by TUV, SGS, BV, or another organization nominated by the project
The certificate shall be EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 wherever required by the project specifications or any statutory body.
Stainless Structural Steel Exporters in India
As stainless structural steel exporters in India, we supply contractors and fabrication yards across the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe.
Sections are long and awkward, so handling damage is the primary transit risk, and contamination is the secondary one. Bundles are made up to weights the receiving equipment can handle, sections supported at multiple bearing points to prevent sag, and lifting positions marked.
Polyester banding replaces steel strapping. Where steel bands are unavoidable, protective packing sits beneath them. Bundles stay separated from carbon steel cargo throughout stowage, and grade identification is marked at both ends of each section in a form that survives the voyage and site handling, since a consulting engineer will reject material that cannot be traced.

About This Page
Property comparisons here are typical for austenitic grades and vary between individual grades and product forms. Structural design in stainless must follow a code written for stainless steel; carbon steel design rules do not transfer. Galvanic compatibility depends on the specific metals, area ratio, electrolyte and exposure, and connection detailing should be reviewed by a qualified engineer for the actual service conditions.
