Stainless Steel Round Bars Overview
The Passive Layer and Its Failure Mechanisms
A chromium content greater than about 10.5 percent forms a chromium oxide layer upon contact with oxygen due to the reactions that take place. This layer is tough, stable, and self-healing; once it is scratched in an oxygen atmosphere, it reforms almost instantaneously.
The following three outcomes arise from this.
Oxygen is required for repair. In a stagnant crevice where oxygen cannot reach, the film cannot reform. This is why crevice corrosion attacks under gaskets, in threads, beneath deposits and at partially penetrated welds, and why design detail matters as much as grade selection.
Chlorides penetrate it locally. A chloride ion breaks through at a weak point, and corrosion proceeds into a pit while the surrounding surface stays bright and apparently sound. Pitting is insidious precisely because the component looks fine from outside.
Contamination compromises it. Carbon steel particles embedded during fabrication rust and destroy the film around them. This is why stainless should be worked with dedicated tools and why passivation after fabrication is standard practice on process equipment.

PREN: Putting a Number on Chloride Resistance
Buyers frequently ask which grade resists corrosion better, and the pitting resistance equivalent number gives a usable ranking for chloride service.
The common formula weighs the three elements that matter: PREN equals chromium percentage, plus 3.3 times molybdenum, plus 16 times nitrogen.

Basic martensitic, around 12% Cr

Standard austenitic, 18% Cr

24 – 28

Treat PREN as a first filter rather than a design rule. It says nothing about stress corrosion cracking, nothing about reducing acids, and nothing about high temperature behaviour. It ranks pitting resistance in chlorides and that is all it does.
Bright Drawing, Peeling and the VD Route
Production route affects both dimension and surface, and surface is where corrosion resistance lives.
Bright drawn bar is cold drawn to close tolerance with a smooth, bright surface. Drawing work-hardens the outer layer significantly in austenitic grades, which raises strength and reduces ductility.
The peeled-and-polished bar is turned to remove the outer layer entirely, then polished. This suits larger diameters where drawing is impractical, and it removes any surface defects carried from hot rolling.
A centreless-ground bar achieves the tightest tolerance and lowest surface roughness, which matters where the bar becomes a shaft running in a seal or bearing.
VD route material is vacuum degassed before casting, lowering inclusion content. In stainless this matters most for polishability and for fatigue-loaded components, since inclusions intersecting a finished surface are both corrosion initiation sites and polishing defects.

Stainless Steel Round Bars Stockists in India
Buyers work with organised stainless steel round bars stockists in India because grade substitution is riskier here than in any other steel family. Two grades that look identical, cost within ten percent of each other and are similar in machine may behave completely differently after six months in a chloride environment.
Stock is segregated by grade with positive identification maintained and stored away from carbon steel. Cross-contamination from carbon steel dust is a genuine problem in mixed warehouses, and it appears months later as rust spotting on a customer's finished component, at which point the material gets blamed.
- Grade segregation with positive material identification retained through cutting
- Storage isolated from carbon steel, preventing iron contamination
- Close-diameter ladder in fast-moving austenitic and martensitic grades
- Single bars through to full-tonnage lots
- Ground bar held where a finished diameter is needed on arrival
- Cutting with dedicated stainless blades, avoiding iron pickup at the cut face
Passivation and Post-Fabrication Treatment
Passivation is widely misunderstood. It does not apply a coating. It removes free iron and other surface contamination so the chromium oxide film can form uniformly across the whole surface.
Where it matters:
- After machining, since tooling transfers iron particles onto the surface
- After welding, where heat tint indicates a chromium-depleted oxide layer that must be removed by pickling before passivation
- After grinding or polishing with abrasives previously used on carbon steel
- Before service in any aggressive environment, where localised contamination becomes a pitting initiation site
Heat tint is worth calling out specifically. The coloured oxide around a weld looks decorative and is anything but. It marks a region where chromium has combined with oxygen at the surface, leaving the metal beneath depleted and vulnerable. It must be removed, not polished over.
Testing and Certification
Standard release covers chemical analysis, tensile and yield strength, elongation, hardness and, for austenitic grades, intergranular corrosion testing where specified.
- Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 practices
- Pitting corrosion testing to ASTM G48 for chloride service
- Positive material identification by portable analyser
- Ferrite content measurement on duplex grades, since the austenite-to-ferrite balance governs properties
- Grain size per ASTM E112 and inclusion according to ASTM E45
- Inspection by third parties such as TUV, SGS, BV or a nominated agency
Certification will be EN 10204 3.1 as standard and 3.2 where necessary.
Stainless Steel Round Bar Exporters from India
Being stainless steel round bar exporters in India, we ship to process equipment builders, marine fabricators and machining units across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Stainless does not need corrosion protection the way carbon steel does, but it needs contamination protection, and fewer suppliers take that seriously. Steel strapping bands leave iron deposits on the bar surface that rust in service and are routinely mistaken for a material defect. We strap stainless with polyester banding, or with protective packing beneath steel bands, and bundles stay separated from carbon steel throughout handling.
Ground and polished bars receive protective wrapping, since surface finish is often the functional characteristic of this material. Documentation, including corrosion test results where applicable, is prepared to destination requirements and sent ahead of the consignment.

About This Page
PREN values and property figures given here are typical guidance and vary with actual composition within a grade. PREN ranks pitting resistance in chloride service only. Grade selection for corrosion service should be made against the specific environment, temperature and concentration by a qualified corrosion or materials engineer, not from a general comparison table.
