Alloy Steel Hex Bars Overview
Cold Drawing Mechanics and the Work-Hardened Layer
Drawing a hexagonal profile places uneven demand on the die. Material must flow into six corners at once, and any imbalance produces twist, corner underfill, or residual stress that releases during machining.
What happens metallurgically is worth understanding, because it explains several things buyers notice and misattribute.
Cold working deforms the grain structure without recrystallisation. Dislocation density rises, the material becomes harder and stronger, and ductility falls. The effect is not uniform through the section: deformation is heaviest at the surface and diminishes towards the core, producing a hardness gradient.

Two practical consequences. First, a machinist taking a light skim cut works in the hardest material on the bar, which is why the first pass often feels harder than expected. Second, the residual stress this creates causes bowing when material is removed asymmetrically, which is why long slender components made from as-drawn hex bar do not stay straight.
Where dimensional stability matters, stress-relieved material is the answer, and the treatment costs far less than correcting distortion later.
Geometry: Across Flats Versus Across Corners
Size is quoted across flats, never across corners, and confusing the two is a routine source of purchasing error.
The relationship is fixed by geometry. For a regular hexagon, the across-corners dimension equals the across-flats dimension divided by the cosine of 30 degrees, which works out at roughly 1.155 times.

Cross-sectional area is across flats squared multiplied by 0.866, and weight per metre is that area multiplied by 7.85 and divided by 1000. A 24 mm hex therefore weighs about 3.92 kg per metre.
The across-corners figure matters whenever the component must pass through a bore, sit in a counterbore, or clear an adjacent feature. Designers who work only from the across-flats dimension discover this at assembly.
What Determines Whether a Hex Bar Performs
The governing parameters here are dimensional, not metallurgical.
Across-flats tolerance. Oversize will not enter a standard die or spanner. Undersize rounds off under torque. The usable window is narrow and unforgiving.
Flat parallelism. Where opposing flats converge along the length, a collet grips over part of its jaw length only and the component runs out of true during machining.
Twist. Helical twist develops if material flow into the six corners is unbalanced. A twisted bar indexes unreliably in a bar feeder and the flats on the finished part will not align with the datum.
Corner definition. Sharp, unbroken corners let the section seat in a spanner. Rounded or laminated corners are the commonest cause of rejection at goods inward.
Blank Sizing for Rolled and Cut Threads
Most alloy hex bars end up as a threaded fastener, and how the thread is formed changes what the bar has to deliver.
Cut threading removes material to create the profile. The blank starts at major diameter and the thread is machined into it. It works on any material and leaves the grain cut through at every root, which is where a fastener fails.
Rolled threading forms the profile by displacing material rather than removing it. The blank starts smaller than the finished major diameter, and rolling dies push material outward to form the crest. Grain flow follows the thread contour, the roots are work hardened and left in compression, and the surface finish is better. Fatigue performance improves substantially, which is why ISO 898-1 and IS 1367 high-strength fasteners are rolled wherever the process allows.
What this means when ordering:
- Blank diameter must suit the process. A rolled thread needs a blank between pitch and major diameter, calculated for the thread form. Ordering at major diameter then rolling produces an oversize thread that will not gauge
- The grade must tolerate cold deformation. Material too hard or brittle cracks at the thread root during rolling
- Diameter consistency matters more than usual, since blank variation translates directly into thread major diameter variation and the gauging window is narrow
- Surface condition affects die life. Rolling dies are expensive and a scored or scaled blank shortens their life measurably

Alloy Steel Hex Bars Stockists in India
Machining units depend on reliable alloy steel hex bars stockists in India for one blunt reason: hex sizes do not substitute. A shop needing 24 mm across flats cannot use 27 mm, because the flats are the functional feature and machining them down defeats the purpose of buying hex stock at all.
Our holding covers the standard across-flats ladder in the grades that move, stored horizontally with support along the length. Unsupported hex bar sags, and straightening a drawn hex risks the corner definition that gives the section its value.
- Standard across-flats sizes held in depth for immediate release
- Supply from single bars to full-tonnage requirements
- Fixed cut lengths with square, burr-free faces for bar feeding
- Consistent bundle length supporting automatic loading systems
- Heat continuity maintained within an order where quantity allows
Supporting Bar-Fed Production
A delivery that is metallurgically correct but dimensionally inconsistent still stops a line. Consistent length eliminates the mixed-bundle problem that disrupts magazine loading and creates excess remnant. Straightness within specification prevents the vibration that degrades finish and shortens tool life. Hardness consistency across a delivery avoids the dimensional drift that forces operator intervention on an otherwise unattended machine.
These are not premium services. They are what a hex bar has to be to do its job, and we supply against them rather than treating them as incidental.
Testing and Certification
Standard release covers chemical analysis, tensile and yield strength, elongation, reduction of area and hardness. Where material goes into fastener production, proof load and wedge tensile testing to ISO 898-1 can be arranged on finished components.
Additional inspection:
- Dimensional verification of across-flats, across-corners and included angle
- Twist and straightness measurement over defined lengths
- Magnetic particle inspection to ASTM E1444, with attention to corner laps and drawing seams
- Decarburisation depth to ISO 3887 and inclusion rating to ASTM E45
- Third-party inspection through TUV, SGS, BV or a nominated agency
Certification is issued to EN 10204 3.1, with 3.2 available on request.
Alloy Steel Hex Bars Exporters in India
As alloy steel hex bars exporters in India, we supply fastener plants, fitting manufacturers and machining units across the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Corner protection governs export packing on this product, and the logic is simple. The functional value of a hex bar sits entirely in its six corners. A corner crushed beneath a strapping band cannot be recovered without taking the bar undersize, which turns a shipment into a write-off rather than a rework.
Strapping is applied over protective packing rather than directly onto the bare section, and dunnage separates bundles. Rust-preventive oil and VCI film protect the drawn surface, since corrosion on a hex face translates into accelerated tool wear on the very first cut. Documentation goes out ahead of the consignment.
