MS Steel Round Bars Overview
MS Steel Round Bar Properties and Specifications
Below the level of 0.25 percent of carbon, it forms a soft, ductile, formable and freely weldable steel. Everything MS is used for follows from those four properties.

The elongation figure is the interesting one. At 22 to 30 percent, MS deforms substantially before it breaks, which means a component overloaded in service bends visibly rather than snapping without warning. In structural and fabrication work, that ductility is a safety property, not merely a forming convenience.
Trade is strength. MS yields at roughly a quarter of what a heat-treated alloy steel manages, so where load matters, the section must be larger. That is often still the cheaper answer, because MS costs a fraction of alloy steel per kilogram.
MS Steel Round Bar Grades and Material Selection
Buyers ordering MS usually get one of three quite different things, and knowing which matters.
The structural quality bar is rolled to a structural standard with guaranteed yield strength and, in some subgrades, impact testing. It is the right choice for anything carrying a load or being certified.
A weldable free-machining bar sits between the two, giving reasonable machinability without the sulphur content that makes welding difficult.
A bright-drawn machining bar is cold-drawn to close tolerance with a clean surface, intended for turned and machined components rather than for structure. Strength is higher than the hot-rolled equivalent because drawing work hardens it, but ductility is lower.
Ordering "MS round bar" without saying which of these you need is the commonest source of dispute in this product. Specify the standard, the condition, or the application, and the right thing arrives.
Hot Rolled, Bright Drawn and Forged
Hot-rolled bar is the cheapest form, rolled at temperature and air-cooled. It carries mill scale, wider dimensional tolerance and a decarburised surface layer. Perfectly adequate for welded fabrication where the bar will be cut, welded and painted.
A bright-drawn bar is hot-rolled stock pulled cold through a die. Scale and the decarburised skin come off, tolerance tightens, the surface becomes clean and bright, and the material work hardens. A bright-drawn bar can go onto a lathe with almost no roughing.
Forged bar covers heavier diameters, worked under a press to consolidate the centreline and refine grain. For most MS applications this is unnecessary, but for large machined components it is the only route to sound material at that size.
The cost ladder runs hot rolled, then bright drawn, then forged, and the right choice is usually the cheapest one that meets the requirement rather than the best available.

Diameter in mm squared times 0.00617 is weight per metre. A 25 mm bar weighs 3.85 kg/metre; a 50 mm bar weighs 15.4 kg. Note that the weight increases with the square of the diameter, and so to go one size more expensive is many times the dimensional step.

MS Steel Round Bars Stockists in India
The value delivered by established MS steel round bar stockists in India is availability and breaking bulk rather than technical selection. Nobody agonises over MS grade choice. They need it today, in the diameters the job calls for, without buying a mill quantity of each.
Our stock covers a close-diameter ladder in both hot-rolled and bright-drawn condition, released from single bars upward, with heat identity retained through cutting so certified work stays traceable.
- Close diameter increments in both hot-rolled and bright-drawn
- Single bars through to full-tonnage lots
- Cutting to a customer list with square, burr-free faces
- Consolidated dispatch across several diameters
- Mill test certificates supplied as standard rather than on request
That last point is worth dwelling on. MS is often sold without documentation on the assumption that nobody needs it, and then the buyer discovers their client requires traceability. We supply certificates with every consignment as a matter of course.
Welding and Fabrication of MS Round Bars
Low carbon steel is easier to weld than nearly any other material, and this is the reason it takes the lead in fabrication. Nevertheless, there are some details that are worth noting.
- No preheat is needed in normal thicknesses at these carbon levels, which is the main practical advantage over medium carbon and alloy grades
- Mill scale must be removed from the weld zone, since welding through scale traps inclusions and produces porosity
- The bright drawn bar carries residual stress from cold drawing, which welding heat releases. Long fabrications made from drawn bars can distort more than expected
- Distortion control comes from sequence, not from clamping alone. A heavily restrained joint locks in stress that reappears when the fixture is released
- Post-weld stress relief is worth considering on assemblies that will be machined afterwards
Testing and Certification
The standard release covers chemical analysis, tensile and yield strength, elongation and hardness. Bend testing is included where the application involves forming.
- Carbon equivalent reported, supporting welding procedure qualification
- Ultrasonic examination on forged and heavy sections
- Dimensional and straightness verification
- ASTM E112 grain size as needed.
- Third-party inspection by TUV, SGS, BV or a specified agency.
The standard is certification EN 10204 3.1, with 3.2 organised where a project specification is to be independently verified.
MS Steel Round Bar Exporters in India
As MS Steel round bar exporters in India, we ship to fabrication contractors, equipment manufacturers and distributors across the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe.
MS presents a straightforward but persistent export problem: it rusts, quickly, and it rusts more visibly than anything else we ship because nothing protects it. Hot-rolled bar carries mill scale, offering limited short-term protection. The bright-drawn bar has none at all and will show surface rust within days inside a humid container.
Protection is applied according to the voyage and the end use. Rust-preventive oil across the full bar surface, VCI wrapping on bright material, and desiccant inside the container on tropical routes. Where a bar will be shot blasted before use, heavy protection adds cost without benefit, and we will say so rather than sell it.
Documentation covering the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, mill test certificates and transport document is prepared to destination requirements and transmitted ahead of the consignment.
Case Hardening and Heat Treatment of MS Round Bars
Low carbon content means MS cannot be thoroughly hardened usefully, but it takes a carburised case extremely well, and this is how a great many wear-resistant components are made cheaply.
Carburising imparts carbon into the surface at high temperature and quenches to harden the enriched layer. The outcome is a hard-wear-resistant skin of a soft, tough core, a combination which is of real value and which no single-composition steel can obtain.

Points worth knowing before specifying it:
- Case depth must suit the contact stress. Too shallow, and the case collapses into the soft core beneath under load, which is a failure mode that looks like the case simply crumbled
- Dimensions grow slightly during carburising and quenching, so machining allowance must account for it where tolerance is tight
- Core strength comes from the steel, not the treatment. MS has a soft core by definition, so where core strength is also needed, a case-hardening alloy grade is the correct choice
- Selective hardening is possible by masking areas that must stay soft for subsequent machining or welding

About This Page
Property ranges given here are typical for low carbon steel and vary with grade, section and condition. MS is a trade term rather than a specification, so material should be ordered against a recognised standard where properties matter. Structural applications should be specified by the design engineer against the applicable code rather than by trade description.
