Stainless Steel Flat Bars Overview
The Five Structural Families
Stainless grades are divided by crystal structure, and structure determines magnetic response, work-hardening behaviour, weldability and whether the material can be hardened at all.

Mostly austenitic grades. Non-magnetic, soft, annealed, good formability and weldability, not heat-treatable and work-hardens readily. Forming the base of food, pharmaceutical, and chemical equipment.
Ferritic grades are magnetic but with reasonable corrosion resistance and less expensive since they do not contain any or only traces of nickel. Suitable where economy is a consideration and chloride exposure is low.
Martensitic grades are magnetic and quench-hardenable and have less corrosion resistance due to the bonding of chromium with carbon, which makes them unavailable for passive films.
Duplex grades contain approximately equal amounts of austenite and ferrite and hence have twice the yield strength of austenitic grades with superior chloride and stress corrosion cracking resistance.
Precipitation hardening grades obtain their high strength through an age-hardening treatment process which is done at low temperatures and causes no distortion.
Reasons Why the Magnet Test Is Deceptive
The stainless steel material will become non-magnetic when subjected to full annealing treatment. Cold work causes alterations.
Through drawing, rolling, bending, and machining of the material, some austenite transforms to martensite. Martensite is a magnetic metal. Therefore, a machined piece, a cold-drawn flat, or the sheared edge of the material will exhibit magnetic behaviour that was not present in the original material.
What this means practically:
- A magnet sticking lightly to a machined austenitic component is normal and indicates cold work, not the wrong grade
- Cut edges are more magnetic than the parent surface, for the same reason
- A strongly magnetic flat across its whole surface suggests a ferritic or martensitic grade, which is worth investigating
- Positive material identification by portable analyser is the only reliable check, and it takes seconds
We supply PMI on request, and we would encourage any buyer running mixed grades through their stores to have an analyser available.
Brightly Drawn and Hot Rolled
Two routes serve different ends of the range.
Brightly drawn flats are cold drawn through a shaped die, giving sharp corners, close thickness tolerance and a bright, scale-free surface. The drawing process work-hardens the material significantly in austenitic grades, raising strength and reducing remaining ductility, which matters if the flat will be bent afterwards.
Hot rolled flats cover wider and heavier sections, supplied annealed and pickled. Tolerance is wider and the surface is duller, but formability is at its maximum because the material is fully softened.
The choice generally follows what happens next. A flat going straight into a welded fabrication is better hot rolled and annealed. A flat that will be machined or used as supplied is better drawn.

Stainless Steel Flat Bars Stockists in India
The case for using capable stainless steel flat bars stockists in India rests on segregation as much as on stock depth. Stainless stored alongside carbon steel picks up iron dust, and iron dust on a stainless surface rusts, which the end customer sees as a material failure rather than a handling failure.
Our flats are stored isolated from carbon steel, racked flat with grade identity maintained, and cut with dedicated blades so the cut face does not carry iron from a wheel previously used on mild steel.
TSB Global LLP is a stockist and supplier, not a rolling mill, and what we add here is selection, segregation and verification rather than manufacture.
- Grade segregation with identity retained through cutting
- Storage isolated from carbon steel to prevent iron pickup
- Close width and thickness increments across sections in regular demand
- Supply from single lengths through to full-tonnage lots
- Dedicated stainless cutting equipment
- Flat racked storage preserving straightness
Fabrication Notes That Differ From Carbon Steel
Fabricators moving from carbon steel to stainless generally get caught by the same three things.
Thermal expansion is around fifty percent higher in austenitic grades, and thermal conductivity is roughly a third of carbon steel's. Heat concentrates locally and the material expands more, so welding distortion is substantially worse than carbon steel practice would predict. Lower heat input, more tack welds and a considered welding sequence all help.
Work hardening is rapid. A tool that rubs rather than cuts hardens the surface ahead of itself, and the next pass then meets harder material. Maintain feed, keep tooling sharp and avoid dwelling in the cut.
Dedicated tooling is not optional. Grinding wheels, wire brushes and clamps previously used on carbon steel transfer iron onto the stainless surface. The contamination is invisible on the day and rusts weeks later.
Testing and Certification
Standard release covers chemical analysis, tensile and yield strength, elongation, hardness and intergranular corrosion testing where specified.
- Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262
- Positive material identification by portable analyser
- Ferrite content measurement on duplex grades
- Dimensional verification of thickness across width, camber and edge condition
- Grain size according to ASTM E112
- Independent inspection by TUV, SGS, BV, or other nominated organization
The Certificate will be EN 10204 3.1, and 3.2 will be
Stainless Steel Flat Bar Exporters in India
As stainless steel flat bar exporters in India, we ship to fabricators, equipment builders and distributors across the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Contamination rather than corrosion governs how stainless flats are packed. Steel strapping leaves iron deposits that rust in service and get blamed on the material, so polyester banding is used, or protective packing is placed beneath steel bands. Bundles are separated from carbon steel throughout handling and stowage.
Bright and polished surfaces receive protective film, since surface finish is frequently the functional characteristic. Strapping intervals are matched to section because wide thin flats bow if banded too far apart, and piece-wise packing lists allow verification at receipt without unbundling.
Cost Drivers in Stainless Flat Bar
Buyers new to stainless are often surprised by how much prices move between grades and between deliveries of the same grade. Three factors explain most of it.
Alloy surcharge. Nickel, chromium, and molybdenum are all tradeable items, and there is an applied surcharge based on their behaviour, independent of the base price. Nickel is the unpredictable metal, which explains why austenitic steels tend to vary more than ferritic steels that contain little or no nickel. A quotation valid for thirty days may genuinely need revising if nickel moves sharply.
Grade, not size. In carbon steel, section size drives price. In stainless, the grade dominates. Switching from the austenitic grade to one containing molybdenum is significantly more expensive than upgrading two pipe sections.
Processing. Ground and polished flats command a considerably higher price compared to hot-rolled and pickled, and the disparity increases with improved finish.
Where budget is under pressure, the productive question is usually whether the specified grade is genuinely required for the environment, rather than whether a smaller section will do.

About This Page
Family characteristics described here are general and vary between individual grades. Magnetic response depends on composition and degree of cold work and should never be used alone to confirm grade. Fabrication guidance is indicative; welding procedures should be qualified to the applicable code. Corrosion service selection should be verified by a qualified engineer against the specific environment.
