Carbon Steel Hex Bars Overview
Across Flats or Across Corners? Getting Hex Bar Dimensions Right
Size is quoted across flats, never across corners and confusing the two is a routine and expensive purchasing error.
The relationship is fixed by geometry. Across corners equals across flats divided by the cosine of 30 degrees, roughly 1.155 times.

Cross-sectional area is across-flats squared multiplied by 0.866. The across-corners figure governs whenever the component must pass through a bore, sit in a counterbore or clear an adjacent feature, and designers working only from the across-flats dimension find out at assembly.
Why Hex Bar Sizes Follow Spanner and Fastener Standards
A Hex bar does not come in a continuous size range. It comes in the sizes that correspond to standard spanner and thread dimensions, because a hex component that does not fit a standard spanner is of very limited use.
This has a commercial consequence buyers should understand. There is no substitution. A shop needing 17 mm across flats cannot use 19 mm, since the flats are the functional feature, and machining them down defeats the entire purpose of buying hex stock.
Common across-flats sizes track metric bolt sizes: 10 mm for M6, 13 mm for M8, 17 mm for M10, 19 mm for M12, 24 mm for M16 and so on. Where a fastener standard changes, the hex sizes required change with it.
Chip Breaking in Free-Cutting Grades
The commercial case for carbon steel hex rests on machining economics rather than on material properties, and chip formation explains why free-cutting grades dominate consumption.
Free-cutting grades carry elevated sulphur, which forms manganese sulphide inclusions through the steel. During cutting, the chip fractures at these inclusions rather than forming a continuous curl. A short broken chip clears the cutting zone at once, takes heat with it, and does not wrap around the tool.
On an automatic machine the consequences are substantial. Higher surface speeds become possible. Tool life extends because the edge runs cooler. Most importantly, the machine runs unattended, because nobody has to clear a bird's nest of swarf from the turret every few cycles.
The price is weldability. The same inclusions that break chips cause hot cracking in a weld pool, so free-cutting hex should not be welded. Where a component needs both machining and welding, a low sulphur grade is the correct specification despite the slower cycle.

Carbon Steel Hex Bars Stockists in India for Standard and Custom Requirements
Machining units depend on reliable Carbon Steel Hex Bars Stockists in India for the reason set out above: there is no workaround for a missing size. That makes stock depth across the standard ladder more valuable here than in any other bar product.
Material is racked horizontally with support along its length. Unsupported hex bars sag and straightening a drawn hex risks damaging the corner definition that gives the section its value in the first place.
TSB Global LLP holds and supplies rather than produces. That is the honest description of what we do, and it is also where the value sits for a buyer needing eight sizes in small quantities.
- Standard across-flats sizes held in depth for immediate release
- Supply from single bars through to full-tonnage requirements
- Fixed cut lengths with square, burr-free faces for bar feeding
- Consistent length within a delivery, supporting automatic loading
- Supported racking preserving straightness and corner sharpness
What Makes a Hex Bar Suitable for Bar-Fed Machining?
Hex bars are consumed almost entirely on bar-fed automatics and sliding headstock lathes, where a bar is loaded once and the machine runs until it is used up. That imposes requirements that have nothing to do with the material specification.
- Consistent length within a bundle – Mixed lengths disrupt magazine loading and produce excess end remnant, which is pure material loss on a volume job
- Straightness – A bowed bar rotating at speed inside a guide bush generates vibration, degrades finish and shortens tool life
- Consistent hardness across the delivery – Variation between heats causes dimensional drift as tools wear at different rates
- Square, burr-free ends – A burr end will not enter a guide bush or collet cleanly, and clearing a jammed bar costs more machine time than the bar is worth
- Diameter consistency against guide bush clearance – Where the fit is tight, tolerance variation becomes a stoppage rather than an inconvenience
Quality Testing and Certification for Carbon Steel Hex Bars
The standard release covers chemical analysis, tensile and yield strength, elongation and hardness. Where material goes into fastener production, proof load and wedge tensile testing to ISO 898-1 can be arranged on finished components.
- Dimensional verification of across-flats, across-corners and included angle
- Twist and straightness measurement over defined lengths
- Magnetic particle inspection to ASTM E1444, with attention to corner laps and drawing seams
- Decarburisation depth to ISO 3887
- Machinability assessment where a grade is being qualified for volume production
- Third-party inspection through TUV, SGS, BV or a nominated agency
- Certification is issued to EN 10204 3.1, with 3.2 available on request.

Two transit risks govern how this product is packed. Corner damage comes first: the functional value of the section sits entirely in its six corners, and a corner crushed under a strapping band cannot be recovered without taking the bar undersize. Strapping is therefore applied over protective packing rather than directly onto the bare section.
Corrosion comes second. Carbon steel rusts readily, and surface rust on a drawn hex face translates directly into accelerated tool wear and inconsistent finish on the first cut. Rust-preventive oil covers the full surface, VCI film wraps the bundle, and desiccant goes inside the container on long tropical routes.
Cost Factors Behind a Machined Hex Component
Buyers comparing quotations on turned hex parts often find the material rate explains very little of the difference between them. The bigger variables sit elsewhere.
- Cycle time – The dominant cost is on a bar-fed part. Anything letting the machine run faster or unattended for longer outweighs a difference in kilogram rate
- Bar utilisation – Every bar leaves a remnant the feeder cannot grip. Fixed lengths matched to part length reduce the proportion lost
- Tool changes – Driven by material consistency as much as tool quality. Hardness variation between heats in one delivery forces earlier changes than the tooling would otherwise need
- Secondary operations – Plating, thread rolling, heat treatment and inspection frequently cost more than the turning itself
- Certification level – Third-party inspection and 3.2 certification carry real cost and lead time and are sometimes specified from habit rather than requirement
Where a buyer wants to reduce landed cost on a hex component, the material rate is usually the smallest lever available.
