Secondary Mill Sourcing

Secondary Mill Sourcing - Steel Exchange

What this route is
Smaller Heats, Lower Landed Cost

Secondary and rerolling mills run shorter campaigns than an integrated producer. That changes two things for a buyer. Price comes down, because the mill works from a different input cost. And minimum quantities come down, because the mill is not committing a full heat to your order.

We work across a network of these mills rather than one, so a single enquiry is compared on landed price, rolling schedule and the quality of the certificate before we quote you.

Smaller Heats, Lower Landed Cost
Right for this route
  • Cost-driven production where the drawing allows commercial-grade material
  • General fabrication and structural work
  • Non-critical machined components
  • Jigs, fixtures, base plates and tooling stock
  • Requirements too small for a primary mill heat
  • Repeat orders where price is renegotiated every quarter
Not right for this route
  • Bearing quality and gear steel, where carburising response must be consistent
  • Pressure, boiler and high-temperature service
  • Anything needing third-party inspection at source or full traceability
  • Safety-critical automotive parts built to an OEM drawing
  • Export orders where the buyer has specified the mill
Our checks
What We Verify Before Quoting

A lower price is only useful if the material works. These checks decide whether we put a secondary mill on your enquiry at all.

Chemistry
Ladle analysis against the grade you asked for — not a near-equivalent quietly substituted.
Certificate
Mill test certificate as issued by the rolling mill, carrying heat number and chemistry. We state upfront what it does and does not cover.
Section and tolerance
Rolled size checked against the tolerance class you need, so machining allowance is not eaten up.
Surface condition
Inspected for rolling defects, seams and excessive decarburisation before dispatch.
Rolling schedule
A real date against the mill's campaign, not an optimistic one. If it slips, you hear it from us.
Landed price
Compared across mills including freight, so the cheapest ex-works quote does not become the most expensive delivery.
