High Speed Steel Round Bars Overview
High-Speed Steel Red Hardness & Secondary Hardening
The property that defines this material is red hardness, sometimes called hot hardness: the ability to retain cutting hardness at temperatures where other tool steels have already gone soft.

The mechanism is secondary hardening, and it is worth understanding because it explains the unusual heat treatment this material demands.
High-speed steel is austenitised at extremely high temperatures, often between 1180 and 1230 degrees, far above anything a conventional tool steel would tolerate. That temperature is necessary to dissolve the tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium carbides into solution. On quenching, those elements are trapped in a supersaturated martensite along with substantial retained austenite.
Something counterintuitive is then done by tempering. The first temper does not soften the steel but forms fine alloy carbides which make the steel harder and transform retained austenite to new martensite. It is because fresh martensite is a brittle substance, and hence high-speed steel is not tempered once but twice or thrice. The martensite that has been formed in any cycle is tempered in the next cycle.
Leaving out the second or third temper results in untempered martensite in the tool, and the tool breaks in service or during grinding.
HSS Grades: Tungsten, Molybdenum, Cobalt & PM
The alloying divides the grade range into recognisable families.
Tungsten types. The original high-speed steels. Tungsten forms tenacious carbides which do not soften with temperature. Hard, tried-and-true, and also fairly expensive due to the high cost of tungsten.
Molybdenum types. Molybdenum plays a similar role with approximately half the atomic weight; therefore, less mass is required. These grades have the upper hand in present production on cost considerations, and they are a little harder than tungsten types with the same hardness. They also are more susceptible to decarburisation during heat treatment, which needs to be controlled.
Cobalt-bearing types. Cobalt does not make carbides. It increases the temperature at which the matrix starts to soften, which elevates red hardness even more. These grades are faster cutters and run hotter but are less tough. Where machine capability warrants the speed is specified.
Powder metallurgy types. Castings for making an ingot were replaced by producing a cast by atomising the melt and consolidating the powder. The consequence is a homogenous fine distribution of carbides rather than the rough, segregated carbides produced by a conventional ingot.
Why Powder Metallurgy HSS Offers Better Cutting Performance
In intrinsically cast high-speed steel, the carbides are created during the solidification, and they are separated into networks. The act of forging divides them but never completely disperses them. The coarse carbide stringers are weak points: they cut out on a cutting edge, and they are hard to grind.
Powder metallurgy will never have the problem. All the atomised droplets solidify within milliseconds; hence, there is no chance of carbides growing or separating. The material that is consolidated is carbide, an order of magnitude smaller, and spread uniformly in all directions.
What that delivers:
- A sharper, more durable cutting edge, since there are no coarse carbides to break out
- Better grindability, which matters on complex tool geometry
- Isotropic properties, so toughness does not depend on orientation relative to the bar axis
- Higher achievable alloy content, because segregation is no longer the limit
- More consistent heat treatment response, since the structure is uniform to begin with
The premium is substantial, and it is justified by complex tooling, high-value cutters and anything where regrinding cost dominates. On simple drills and turning tools, conventional material remains the economic choice.

Density is notably higher than ordinary steel because of the tungsten content, which is why a bar of high-speed steel feels heavier than its size suggests and why weight-based pricing needs the correct figure applied.
High-Speed Steel Round Bar Applications
- Cutting tools. Drills, taps, reamers, end mills, milling cutters, hobs
- Broaches. Where toughness and edge retention over a long tooth run are both required
- Saw blades. Circular and band saw tipping and segments
- Punches and dies. High-wear cold work applications where toughness matters more than in conventional tool steel
- Woodworking tooling. Planer blades, moulding cutters, router bits
- Form tools and inserts. Profile cutters, gear cutting tools, thread chasers
High-Speed Steel Round Bars Stockists in India
Tool manufacturers depend on capable high-speed steel round bar stockists in India because the combination of many grades, many diameters and small quantities per item is unworkable through a mill. A tap manufacturer may need eleven diameters in two grades, none of them in tonnage.
Our holding covers the common diameters in the widely used molybdenum, tungsten and cobalt-bearing grades, plus powder metallurgy material in the sizes that move. Material is identified by grade and stored so that a short-cut piece can be released without disturbing the rest.
TSB Global LLP is a stockist and supplier rather than a producer, and on a material basis, that distinction is worth stating.
- Broad grade range in the small diameters where cutting tool production concentrates
- Cut pieces released by the kilogram rather than by mill length
- Grade identity maintained on every cut piece, since annealed HSS grades are visually identical
- Ground bar held where a finished diameter removes an operation
- Annealed hardness confirmed on release, so machinability is known before the job starts
HSS Round Bar Heat Treatment Requirements
High-speed steel is the most demanding material we supply in terms of heat treatment, and buyers should be confident their processor is equipped for it.
- Staged preheating is essential, typically at two or three temperatures, since low thermal conductivity means a tool charged straight into a hot furnace cracks
- Austenitising temperature is critical and narrow. Too low, and carbides do not dissolve, giving inadequate hardness. Too high and grain grows, giving a brittle tool
- Salt baths or vacuum furnaces are preferred, since atmosphere control prevents the decarbonisation that destroys a cutting edge
- Multiple tempers, never one. Two as a minimum, three where maximum toughness is required
- Cryogenic treatment between temps is used on some tooling to convert retained austenite more completely
A tool that fails prematurely is more often a heat treatment problem than a material problem, and the fault is usually an omitted temper.
HSS Round Bar Testing, Inspection & Certification
Certification covers chemical analysis and annealed hardness as a minimum. The tests that predict tool performance go further:
- Carbide size and distribution assessment, the governing quality measure on conventional material
- Ultrasonic examination to ASTM A388 on forged sections
- Decarburisation depth to ISO 3887
- Grain size to ASTM E112
- Hardness response verification through a trial heat treatment cycle
- Third-party inspection through TUV, SGS, BV or a nominated agency
Certification is EN 10204 3.1, with 3.2 available on request.
High-Speed Steel Round Bar Exporters in India
As high-speed steel round bar exporters in India, we supply cutting tool manufacturers and tool rooms across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe.
This is the highest value material per kilogram in our range, and packing reflects that. Bars travel in timber cases rather than open bundles, ground diameters carry protective sleeving, and cut pieces are wrapped individually.
Individual wrapping is not fussiness. Annealed high-speed steel grades are visually indistinguishable from one another, and a mixed-up grade is discovered only after a tool has been hardened and fails to perform. Every piece carries grade marking directly on the material as well as on the packing, and packing lists state grade and size against each item.
Why Choose TSB Global for HSS Round Bars?
Choose TSB Global LLP for high-speed steel round bars when consistency, traceability, and dependable supply matter. We stock a broad range of tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt-bearing, and powder metallurgy HSS grades across commonly required diameters. Our material is supplied annealed, making it suitable for machining before hardening, with hardness confirmed at release. Every cut piece is identified by grade to prevent costly mix-ups, while ground bars can help eliminate additional finishing operations. We support both small-quantity requirements and varied sizes that are difficult to source directly from mills. Certification includes chemical analysis and annealed hardness, with additional testing and third-party inspection available on request. For export orders, protective packaging and individual grade identification help ensure material arrives safely and correctly.

Hardness and property figures given here are typical values for guidance and vary with grade, heat treatment and measurement method. Heat treatment parameters are indicative and must be established for the specific grade with a qualified heat treatment provider. Tool performance depends on geometry, machine rigidity, cutting conditions and coolant as much as on material selection.
